Rock Island

Picture
Centennial Bridge spanning the Mississippi from Rock Island to Davenport
Located in Rock Island County along the Mississippi River is the City of Rock Island, one of the Quad Cities.

The images above and below show the Centennial Bridge that was built by the City of Rock Island in 1940 to connect it with the Davenport, Iowa.  Lights were added in 1989 at the end of a decade that saw the loss of so many jobs due to the hard times that the Quad City farm implement industry suffered at the beginning of the decade, resulting in the population of Rock Island shrinking by the thousands.  However, the lights symbolize the resourcefulness and determination of the city as it diversifies it economy.
