Located along US Rt. 20 in eastern Jo Daviess County is the village of Stockton. Because of a building boom in the 1890's, Stockton has one of the most beautiful Main Streets of any small town in Illinois, but most outsiders miss it as they skirt the northern fringes of town on Highway 20.
One of the nicest places to stop and eat in Illinois is the L.A. Drive In on Highway 20 in Stockton. The L.A. Drive In offers simple, classic, American roadhouse food, and In spite of the name, the theme of the decor matches nicely the beauty of northwestern Illinois. Outside there is an old John Deere tractor and a metal dairy cow statue. Inside is there are several murals of the idyllic Illinois countryside that are beautifully painted by a local high school student. The murals are rich in detail and you can notice something new every time you stop in. If you only had time to visit one place, the L.A. Drive In would be the place to go.
