Located in northeastern Illinois on the banks of the Kankakee River is a city of more than 26,000 people, Kankakee. It is the seat of Kankakee County, and its courthouse is pictured above.
The Kankakee area was one of the last areas to be settled in Illinois as much of it was swampy marshland. The Illinois Central Railroad completed a line along a bend in the river 1853, and the city of Kankakee grew up around it.
